Generally the population can access a free credit report once per year from each of the three main credit reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. But now according to the companies, they are making free weekly credit reports available to help people “protect their financial health during the sudden and unprecedented hardship caused by COVID-19.”
It’s always smart for everyone to check their credit reports from all three companies to make sure the information in the systems are accurate. Given the anxiety of finances presently, and borrowers requesting payment modifications and forbearances, it’s a critical time to confirm there are no erroneous derogatories being posted by the creditors.
Note: It’s also a good idea to credit minor children’s credit for fraud (it happens).
We can now access their free weekly credit report at AnnualCreditReport.com every week for the next year. Don’t pull from other sites, as this is the “one” that is set up by the agencies. Also don’t pay for the credit scores. They aren’t based on any algorithms that a lender would utilize in underwriting a new credit account.
