Interesting Numbers to Digest

Some interesting numbers to make you go ummm…

1) Impact on the Economy – The building of an average single family home creates the equivalent of 2.97 jobs for a full year. The building of an average rental apartment creates the equivalent of 1.13 jobs for a full year (source: National Association of Home Builders)

2) State and Local Taxes – For every $100 that the average American pays in state income tax in a single year, he/she pays $103 in sales tax (on consumer purchases throughout the year) and $145 in property taxes (source: Tax Foundation)

3) Parents or Kid? – A July 2014 survey found that 31% of US households are providing financial assistance to adult children, a larger number than the 21% of US US households that are providing financial assistance to elderly parents (source: American Consumer Credit Counseling)

4) Water Woes – 93% of California is experiencing a “severe drought” (note that the continuum of droughts is defined as a range from “severe” to “extreme” to “exceptional”). 14% of the United States is experiencing at least a “severe” drought. (source: US Drought monitor)

5) No Fancy Degree – 20 current members of the US House of Representatives (out of 435 members in the House) have no educational degree beyond a high school diploma (source: Congressional Research Service)

6) Nothing for Me – 1 out of 7 American workers (14%) surveyed in April 2015 (total of 1,015 people participated) do not believe Social Security will ever pay them a penny of retirement benefits (source: Gallup)

7) Low Cost, High Usage – An average working couple in America that turned 65 years old in 2015 is projected to receive $427,000 in Medicare benefits over their lifetime, more than 3 times the $141,000 they paid in Medicare taxes during their working years (source: Urban Institute)

8) More Than Half the Gain – The total return of the S&P 500 over the the years 2010-2014 was 105.1%. the best 12 trading days during the 5 years produced a 53.7% gain. Thus 1% of trading days was responsible for 51% of the indexes total return. (source: BTN Research)

9) Anyone With a Birthday Today? – Wish just 23 people in a room, there is a 51% chance that 2 people in the group will have the same birthday. (source: BTN Research)

10) Major Illnesses – 4 chronic diseases (cancer, strokes, diabetes and heart disease) are the cause of 67% of the deaths in America each year (source: National Council of the Aging)
